Hi folks. Welcome back to Sunday Sundries, where I talk about whatever comes to mind.
In case it hasn't become clear yet, I love stories. I love all mediums and all genres (some more than others, but we all have our faves), and I love to both find and create in as many different mediums as I can.
I love how podcasting has brought back the Radio Drama, and how it's become more and more accessible for both listeners and creators.
A podcast is the next thing you'll be getting from me (countdown: 3 days!), so naturally I've been listening to some, particularly those that do what I hope to be able to do (eventually—gotta learn and improve as I go, like most things).
The overall aim of my podcast is to get stories written by queer folk out into the world more. The aim of each single episode, is to make it sound as good as I can. It’s my first attempt at this particular type of editing, and I'm still grappling with the best ways to find and apply things. But sfx is going on, and I'm balancing tracks, etc. I think it’s all coming out sounding pretty good so far.
But that’s enough of that, on to the recommendation! Scare You To Sleep has become a new fave podcast, and a bit of a model on what I want.
There are others - the sound design on Old Gods Of Appalachia is so good it hurts, for example, but they have multiple people, and also money.
But Shelby Scott, who started this strange little podcast where she tells you scary stories quietly, with sound effects and (later) music, to help you sleep, is actually Goals for me.
I'm a daywalker so I usually use the bedtime scary stories to wake up with rather than fall asleep to, but I love this show.
Shelby - though I'm sure she would debate it - is quite the charmer. Her intros and exits are all done individually for each episode, and she often drops into a ramble about something. She gets self-conscious about it, but also can’t seem to stop it—which I relate to very much.
The stories she reads are mostly those submitted to her, but occasionally she uses her own, and both are always very good, and she brings them out really well (sometimes too well, always pay attention to the content warnings!).
Fans of the show are enthusiastic, welcoming, and love to chat to each other.
Plus, Shelby is vocally anti-fascist, and openly an ally to queer folk of all flavours.
So what’s not to love?
Nothing, exactly.
If horror isn’t your thing, it’s maybe not the best show for you. But if it is, definitely check out Scare You to Sleep—on any of your podcast apps.
That’s all for today! A short one because I’m juggling a bunch of tasks for the podcast and other things. But do check out Scare You to Sleep, it’s excellent.
And of course, don’t forget to subscribe and share!
And to go find Strange Stories from Odd Folx (with an X) at oddfolx.podbean.com, or on…currently everything but Apple Podcasts because they take forever.
That’s all for today, see you next time!
