Sunday Sundries: The Relationship That Wasn't
And the people who were convinced it was
Hi folks! Welcome back to Sunday Sundries, where I talk about whatever’s on my mind.
It's a while since I just told you a story, so this week, I want to tell you a fun one from almost 20yrs ago.
At the time, I was in my early 20s, had recently returned to the UK, and wasn't really sure what to do with myself. So I'd wound up renting a town over from where I grew up, and doing some temping. I worked twice for the same place, first data entry, then stuffing court summons into envelopes.
Side note: by the time these were being sent out they'd been through a lot of hands, so the lady who had put down that her job was “slave” should really have been spotted sooner…
Anyway, this was a small team, and we sat around one table, just round the corner from the data entry team. So the boredom was relieved by just chatting away, and I hit it off with one of the others, who I'll call Liz.
Liz was a lesbian, a bit younger than me, and we shared a silly sense of humour. We'd go for lunch at the pub across the street, and she'd often return slightly tipsy after a half pint (and the one time she had a whole pint she barely stopped giggling all afternoon). We also got to hanging out when not at work.
After a while, we discovered that most of the office thought we were together. We told them we weren't (because we weren't, and were not at all attracted to each other), but mostly thought it was funny.
One day, I invited L to join me on a day out to hang out with some friends. She came along, we all had a good time, and I met, for the first time, a woman I'll call Emily.
Emily and I really hit it off. And when that night a few of us wound up at a club and somewhat drunk, Emily and I were doing some making out off to one side.
I didn't find this out til the day after, but it seems that a couole of people from work spotted Emily and I, and got very concerned for Liz. They asked her if it didn't bother her, and she laughingly reminded them that we kept telling them we weren't together!
By the time we got to work again on the following Monday, the gossip had changed…
Most of it was “Well shit, guess they aren't a thing”. But of course some of it was “Poor Liz”, which again amused us both.
Liz and I were only ever a thing in the minds of a bunch of straight people who saw two lesbians and immediately jumped to conclusions 🤷
Anyway, that's all for today! Til next time, please remember to subscribe and share.
